Nobody checks an amended return once. They check it on a Tuesday, then again on Thursday, then start wondering whether the envelope arrived at all. The tool is deliberately quiet for the first stretch, and it is the silence that worries people rather than anything that has actually gone wrong.
How to Check Your Amended Return Status
Use the IRS Where’s My Amended Return tool with your Social Security number, date of birth and ZIP code, or call the automated line at 866-464-2050. Wait three weeks after filing before you look. The tool covers the current tax year and up to three prior years, and it is available around the clock except for a maintenance window on Monday mornings.
Returns the Tool Cannot Track
Before you conclude that something has gone wrong, check that the tool covers your filing at all. The IRS says Where’s My Amended Return cannot give a status for business returns, carryback applications and claims, injured spouse claims, a Form 1040 marked as amended or corrected instead of a Form 1040-X, or returns being processed by a special unit such as examination or bankruptcy.
That last category catches people out, because a return can start in the ordinary queue and be routed out of it later. A status that showed Received and then stopped changing for months is often a return that moved somewhere the tool no longer reports on, rather than a return that was lost.
If your filing is on that list, the tool is the wrong instrument and the account transcript is the right one.
What Each Status Actually Means
There are three, and the IRS wording for each is more specific than it looks.
Received
The amended return is in the system and being processed. That is all it means. It is not a judgment about whether the change will be accepted, and it does not start any countdown you can rely on.
Adjusted
An adjustment was made to your account. Notice what this does not say. It does not say a refund is coming. The IRS states plainly that the adjustment will result in a refund, a balance due, or no tax change at all, so an Adjusted status on a return you filed hoping for money back is not yet the answer you were looking for.
Completed
Processing is finished, and the IRS will send everything connected with it by mail. If the outcome matters to a loan closing or a payment plan, this is the point at which a letter is on its way rather than the point at which you know what it says.
How Long Amended Returns Are Taking
The Window the IRS Publishes
The IRS asks taxpayers to allow 8 to 12 weeks for a Form 1040-X to be processed, and says that in some cases processing could take up to 16 weeks. Those figures sit on the Where’s My Amended Return page itself, and they describe the ordinary case rather than the queue.
The queue is a separate number and it is worth knowing. The IRS publishes a processing status page listing the month of receipt it is currently working, and in late August 2026 the amended Form 1040 series showed May 2026. Read those two figures together before you plan around a refund.
Why the Tool Can Show Nothing for Weeks
Processing an amended return is still a manual process, which the IRS says in Topic 308. A person opens it, compares it against what is already posted, and works it. Nothing about that generates a status the day it lands, and the three-week rule before you can check at all is the IRS building that reality into the tool.
Why Amended Refunds Take Longer Than Original Ones
An original return is matched, scored and processed largely by machine. An amended return arrives asking the IRS to change something it has already accepted, so the account has to be reopened, the change reviewed against the original figures, and the result reposted. That is a different kind of work.
The IRS lists the specific conditions that push a return past twelve weeks in its amended return questions. Errors. An incomplete return. A missing signature. A return sent back to you for more information. An injured spouse allocation. An account affected by identity theft or fraud. Delays also occur when the return has to be routed to a specialized area, cleared by the bankruptcy unit, reviewed by a revenue officer, or looked at as part of an appeal or a reconsideration.
A pattern runs through that list. Most of what slows an amended return is not the IRS being slow. It is the return needing something it did not arrive with, or the account carrying something else the IRS has to deal with first.
Do Amended Refunds Get Direct Deposited
Yes, with two conditions. Direct deposit is available for electronically filed amended returns for tax year 2021 and later, and the bank details have to be on the electronically filed Form 1040-X. A paper 1040-X still produces a paper check.
If you are amending more than one year, each year is its own filing and each one runs on its own clock. One thing worth checking before you file at all is the refund window. To claim a refund, Topic 308 gives you 3 years after the date you filed the original return or 2 years after the date you paid the tax, whichever is later.
How to Speed It Up, and the Things That Do Not Help
What genuinely helps is a short list. File electronically where the year allows it. Sign it. Attach every form and schedule the amended figures rely on, even ones that did not change. Include the bank details. Respond the same week if the IRS writes asking for something.
The list of what does not help is longer, and it is where people lose time. Filing a second copy does not move it up the queue and creates a duplicate the IRS has to untangle. Calling for a status update before the tool shows one gets you the same information the tool has. Amending an amendment before the first one has posted produces two competing changes to the same year.
When the Amended Return Is Not About a Refund
Most people reading this are waiting on money. A smaller group is not, and this is where the wait carries actual risk.
You Amended Because of a Notice
If the amended return was filed in response to an IRS notice, the notice has its own deadline and the amendment does not pause it. Those two things run side by side, and answering the notice in writing inside its window matters more than the status of the 1040-X. Our guide to which IRS notices can be ignored and which cannot sorts the letters by how much time each one gives you, and our IRS notice guide decodes the code in the upper right corner.
You Amended and Now Owe More
An amendment that increases the tax creates a balance, and the balance starts accruing interest and penalties from the original due date rather than from the date you amended. Waiting for Completed before dealing with it costs money every month.
This is the case worth bringing to us. We pull your IRS account and wage and income transcripts before recommending anything, so the conversation starts with what the IRS has actually posted rather than with what the return says. Our IRS case investigation page explains what that pull covers.
If the same account also has years that were never filed, unfiled returns come first, because most resolution paths need full filing compliance before the IRS will look at them. Our services page covers the resolution work that follows either way.
What to Do While You Wait
If you are simply waiting on a refund, the answer is patience plus the two numbers above. Check the tool weekly rather than daily, and read the queue month alongside the published window so your expectation matches reality.
If the amendment sits on top of a notice, a balance, or an unfiled year, that is a different problem and the wait is working against you. Talk to us in Peoria or Las Vegas and you will get an Enrolled Agent on the phone, not a call center. You never meet with the IRS. We do. Call 877-924-1040 or reach us through our contact page, and our team page shows exactly who does the work here.
FAQ
Is the IRS processing amended returns?
Yes, and it publishes the month of receipt it is currently working. In late August 2026 the amended Form 1040 series stood at May 2026. That is the queue figure, separate from the 8 to 12 week processing window the IRS quotes for an individual return.
How do I track my IRS amended return?
Through Where’s My Amended Return on IRS.gov or the automated line at 866-464-2050, using your Social Security number, date of birth and ZIP code. Wait three weeks after filing. It covers the current year and three prior years.
Why is it taking so long for my amended return?
Amended returns are worked manually rather than automatically. Past that, the IRS names specific causes, among them errors, an incomplete or unsigned return, an injured spouse allocation, identity theft on the account, and routing to a specialized area such as examination or bankruptcy.
What does amended return status mean?
Received means it is in the system. Adjusted means a change was made to your account, which may produce a refund, a balance due, or no change at all. Completed means processing is finished and the IRS is mailing you the outcome.
